Americans for Kashmir is actively engaging Vice President Biden's campaign about the status of Kashmir and minority rights under the BJP government.

 

After weeks of constructive dialogue, Vice President Biden's campaign released a document outlining his campaign's preliminary position on Kashmir and the degradation of minority rights in India. 

 

In Kashmir, the Indian government should take all necessary steps to restore rights for all the people of Kashmir.  Restrictions on dissent, such as preventing peaceful protests or shutting or slowing down the Internet, weaken democracy. Joe Biden has been disappointed by the measures that the government of India has taken with the implementation and aftermath of the National Register of Citizens in Assam and the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act into law. These measures are inconsistent with the country’s long tradition of secularism and with sustaining a multi-ethnic and multi-religious democracy.

Taking a stand against Indian policies, even one rooted in human rights, will inevitably result in push back. We want to applaud Biden for taking this important first step and encourage him to continue to champion human rights and democracy in Kashmir and around the world.
