Call on Congress
To designate India as a country of particular concern (CPC)
What is happening?
Last week, hundreds of Kashmiri Shiite worshippers were violently assaulted by authorities while trying to observe one of the most significant religious events of the year. Dozens of congregants were rushed to hospitals for serious injuries from shotgun pellets and tear gas. Some of the victims were teenagers, and may have permanently lost their eyesight. Many were also detained by authorities under dubious pretenses.
This clear assault on religious freedom is unfortunately only the latest in a long and rapidly growing list of violations tied to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP government both in Kashmir and across the region.
In their most recent annual report, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) recommended that the State Department designate India a country of particular concern, or CPC, for “engaging in and tolerating systematic, ongoing, and egregious religious freedom violations, as defined by the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA)."
